WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN SOCIETY BREAKS DOWN. CASE STUDY-HAITI.

Decades of political disruption and corruption, a series of natural disasters, and a power vacuum left following the assassination of Haiti’s president, has left the country in the grip of militias and armed gangs, and on the brink of starvation.

The gangs, which include members of the police, have been responsible for an upsurge in killings, rapes, and kidnappings.

Airports, police stations, ports, and even the Central Bank have been attacked with virtual impunity. The two main prisons have been raided, which resulted in 4000 prisoners escaping.

There is no realistic chance of ant improvements in the near to medium future. The UN look on, make the right noises, but do not offer any effective solutions.

So whilst the world watches, Haitians starve, and die. In effect, the state of Haiti has been dismantled, and replaced by gangs and war lords.

What can we learn from this situation?

  • Stay alert to the current situation in your country in respect of the political, economic, and social conditions.
  • Have at least an outline of a plan as to what to do, and where to go, in the likelihood of a breakdown in society or imminent threat.
  • As ever, have at least a small amount of cash and gold at the ready.

I still have in my mind the images of thousands of cars clogged up in traffic jams trying to leave Ukranian cities when the Russians invaded. Don’t wait to make your move like so many of those poor people.
