GLOBAL CONFLICTS
As the existing world order is challenged, and the world becomes entangled in the struggle for
supremacy between Western style democracies and authoritarian regimes, the potential for global
conflicts has risen dramatically. Let’s look at some of the potential areas for new or expanded
conflicts-
Ukraine and Russia. In reality, Ukraine has become the battleground between NATO and Russia.
Both sides cannot afford to lose. If Russia loses, there is the distinct possibility that Russia would
face regime change, and the possible break up of Russia. If Russia wins the war in Ukraine, there
is every reason to suppose that Russia will then turn their attention to other ex-Soviet countries on
their borders. The potential for the conflict spreading beyond Ukraine remains high, and the use of
nuclear weapons is a distinct possibility.
China and Taiwan. China continues to flex their economic and military muscles, and make no
secret of their wish to expand their spheres of influence. Following the absorption of Hong Kong,
they are increasingly looking at Taiwan. There are two factors that may determine the launch of an
attack. Firstly, how Russia fares in Ukraine. Secondly, the likely reaction of the US to an attack of
Taiwan. The potential for conflict remains high.
Israel and Iran. This has nothing to do with religion, it is about two regional powers increasing their
spheres of influence and dominance in the region. In effect, the two countries have been fighting
proxy wars for decades, but this will escalate into war should Israel believe that Iran is about to
possess nuclear weapons. The potential for conflict remains high.
These are the top three situations to monitor, however, as the world continues to witness the
ongoing global power struggles, there will be others emerging, and they can happen very quickly.
